Most Stolen Vehicle Parts and Accessories in Mzansi

South African motorists are facing a growing threat: car part theft. While hijackings continue to be a concern, statistics show that criminals are increasingly targeting vehicle components and accessories, stripping cars for parts that are readily available and lucrative on the black market.

This trend is concerning for several reasons. Unlike stolen vehicles, which are often recovered (though sometimes stripped bare), stolen parts are much harder to trace. Cartrack, a vehicle security company, highlights the ease with which carjackers operate: “We’ve heard many stories of vehicles being stolen and then later being found completely stripped.”

The allure of thieves is clear. Spare parts are in high demand, and dismantling a car is often faster and less risky than stealing an entire vehicle. Siyakha Masiye, spokesperson at MiWay, explains, “Chop shops have an estimated trade value of about R442 million, which makes stealing and reselling car parts a lucrative business on the black market, sometimes more lucrative and less traceable than reselling a stolen vehicle.”

What parts are most at risk? According to MiWay’s data, wheels, wheel caps, car batteries, sound equipment, mirrors, and headlights are top targets. Even airbags, tailgates, and tyres are commonly stolen due to their high resale value and ease of concealment. A stolen bakkie tailgate, for instance, can fetch a hefty sum on the black market, making them especially desirable to criminals.

The problem is further compounded by the growing sophistication of carjackers. Masiye acknowledges that many motorists have adopted safety measures like parking in well-lit areas, installing tracking devices, and remaining vigilant. However, these tactics are no guarantee of protection.

There’s an even more disturbing trend: mechanics getting involved in the theft. Cartrack warns, “Dishonest mechanics involved in this will take other parts out of your car while repairing it, then replace those parts with faulty, cheaper ones.”

So, what can you do to protect your car? While comprehensive car insurance is crucial for financial protection in case of theft or damage, there are steps you can take to deter criminals in the first place.

  • Equip your wheels with locknuts.
  • Reinforce your battery bracket.
  • Always park in busy, visible, and well-lit areas.
  • Double-check that your vehicle is locked when you leave it.
  • Keep valuables out of sight.
  • Avoid driving through high-risk areas and known hijacking hotspots.
  • Never connect to unfamiliar Wi-Fi networks from your car.
  • Stay vigilant and do not be lured out of your car for any reason.
  • Install a GPS tracker so your vehicle can be located if stolen or hijacked.

Car part theft is a serious threat to South African motorists. By implementing preventative measures, choosing comprehensive insurance, and staying informed, we can collectively make it harder for criminals to target our vehicles. Remember, vigilance is key.
