Arizona teens learn the power of listening at this boot camp
High school can be a difficult time for Arizona teens, especially as they consider what they want to do after graduation.
Whether it’s college, the workforce or something else entirely, Friends of Public Radio Arizona aims to help those students dream big and have the skills to reach their goals with a special boot camp.
SPOT 127 Youth Media Center opened its doors in 2012 and has since taught hundreds of metro Phoenix students the art of storytelling in different mediums.
The media center teaches photography, video and audio production skills while also training students to think critically, be curious and engage with their communities.
Friends of Public Radio Arizona previously received a grant from The Arizona Republic’s Season for Sharing campaign grant to assist with expenses for the SPOT 127 Youth Media Center. The campaign has raised and given away more than $74 million to Arizona nonprofits since 1993.

The growth and success of our students are what inspire our work. Our goal is to prepare high school students for major life decisions that will impact their future, such as college, trade school or a post-high school job. SPOT 127 applies a unique digital media curriculum and applied learning practices that enable students to develop communication and technological skills leading to a wide range of educational and employment opportunities. We are motivated to continuously improve our program as we watch our SPOT 127 students receive acknowledgement for their outstanding work.
