Inside NCTA: Hands-On Learning, Student Stories, and Big Opportunities in Curtis

The Rural Radio Network Roadshow made a in Curtis to spotlight the people and programs shaping the future of agriculture at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture (NCTA).

From faculty to students, the conversations highlighted what makes NCTA unique — a small-campus atmosphere with big opportunities for hands-on learning, industry partnerships, and a true sense of community.

Hands-On, Real-World Learning
NCTA students gain more than just classroom knowledge. Whether it’s veterinary technology students caring for animals, agronomy majors working in the field, or equine students learning with the latest technology, NCTA provides practical training that prepares graduates for real-world success.

“We really go out and model hands-on,” said Associate Dean Jennifer McConville. “Students are out in the fields, working with cattle, and gaining experiences that directly connect to workforce needs.”

Faculty Dedicated to Student Growth
Professors at NCTA bring decades of industry and teaching experience to Curtis. Faculty like Dr. Clyde Cranwell, Jessica Rodman, Brad Ramsdale, Dan Stehlik, and Joanna Hergenreder shared how programs are shaped in direct response to Nebraska’s workforce needs. Their goal: ensuring graduates are ready to step into meaningful careers in agriculture.

“Our job is to build a workforce for the agriculture industry in Nebraska,” said Dr. Cranwell. “The students I’ve met here are impressive, and there are jobs waiting for them when they graduate.”

Students Share Their “Why”
The heart of NCTA is its students. From Sidney to Silver Creek to Elbert, Colorado, students described why they chose Curtis as the place to build their future. They praised the campus’s family feel, hands-on opportunities, and the ability to bring personal passions — from shooting sports to stock dogs — into their college experience.

“I came to NCTA because of the hands-on learning,” said Madeline Kashner, an animal science and ag business student from Elbert, Colorado. “You’re not just stuck in a classroom — you’re out with the animals and getting real experiences every day.”

Opportunities Beyond the Classroom
NCTA offers a variety of unique extracurriculars, including a nationally recognized stock dog program, clay shooting sports, rodeo, and ranch horse teams. These experiences give students valuable skills, lifelong friendships, and leadership opportunities that extend beyond academics.
